WESTERN Australia’s leading speedway drivers will converge on Kalgoorlie in October for the annual Fireball Derby.
Kalgoorlie International Speedway will host the action-packed event for its third year on Saturday, October 11.
While rain was the winner last year, five-time Australian champion Brad Blake took an all-the-way lead to win in 2006.
Blake will return this year to reclaim his title.
US racer Ron Miller came a close second in 2006 and was followed up by Brad Ludlow in third.
Both drivers have nominated for the 2008 Fireball Derby.
Blake will be using the meet to turn over a new leaf following a poor 2007/08 season by his standards.
But a driver who will be one to watch this year is current Australian Champion Ludlow.
The popular Perth racer has always been the bridesmaid when it comes to big races, but Ludlow turned that form on its head at the Perth Motorplex on Sunday night by winning his first Australian Dirt Late Model Nationals.
A class driver who this season has the machinery and support to get the job done, it would not surprise to see Ludlow lay claim to the Fireball trophy as well.
Some of the other racers looking to stamp their name on the event include Craig and Bert Vosbergen in their immaculate and super fast TVR Rockets, Ben Ludlow, who finished second to son Brad in the Nationals, and Ryan ‘The Black Knight’ Halliday who turned in a storming drive from the rear at the Nationals.
The three Oldfield brothers – Warren, Jason, and Jamie – could pull a surprise out of the bag as all three have shown glimpses of top form at various stages this season.
Kevin Bell, Matt Noakes, Clint Noakes, Matt Goodlad, Rob MacGregor, Mark Matthews, Barry Blake, Jay Cardy and Phil Richards can all be expected to keep the pressure right on making this years Fireball a must-see.
