Act like an idiot at the footy and you'll pay – police

WITH four weeks of Goldfields football left, the message is loud and clear.

Act like an idiot at the remaining home-and-away games this weekend, or during the finals series, and you can expect top be hit with a $200 infringement notice.

Officer in charge of Kalgoorlie Police, Senior Sergeant Tony Mettam, and Goldfields Football League chairman, Hugh Gallagher, were at pains to make that point during a joint announcement on Monday.

“We all know that emotions will run much higher at finals time, so we just want everyone to understand that anti-social behaviour is not acceptable,” Senior Sergeant Mettam said.

He said more police will be patrolling the remaining games and the finals, particularly looking out for people who a drinking in areas where they are not supposed to and using unacceptable language.

“We want everyone to be able to go to the football and enjoy themselves,” he said.

“If you want to have a drink at the football, there are bar areas where you can get one.”

Senior Sergeant Mettam said it was illegal to drink packaged alcohol outside the designated bar areas at the grounds so police would be checking some cars going into the football for alcohol.

“Basically, if you go along, drink too much and make an idiot of yourself, it'll cost you $200,” said.

Senior Sergeant Mettam said many people might not be aware that it is illegal to drink outside the bar areas, so the initial approach by patrolling police would be a warning.

However, if people persisted and became a nuisance to others then they risked “being hit with an infringement notice”.

He said there was not normally many problems with anti-social behaviour at the football, but police wanted to ensure a trouble-free finals series.

Mr Gallagher said a “red flag went up” at a game several weeks ago when he heard parents, attending for a half-time little league match, complaining about the bad language and behaviour of some spectators.

“If some parents don't feel comfortable taking their children to the football then we would be remiss to ignore that,” he said.

Mr Gallagher said football fans who did the wrong thing, including taking packaged alcohol into grounds rather than buying drinks at the bar, were not supporting their football clubs.

“This time of year is when the clubs are looking to make some money from the gate takings and the bars.

“If unacceptable behaviour by some discourages others from attending, or people bring their own alcohol in, they are not helping their clubs.”

He said the police had approached the GFL for a “collaborative approach” to making the finals enjoyable for everyone.
