Eyes on Street help police beat crime

PEOPLE who break the law may feel like they are being watched, and chances are they probably are.

Kalgoorlie-Boulder has become the latest city to implement the highly-successful Eyes on the Street program.

Launched last Friday, Eyes on the Street is a coordinated intelligence gathering program that encourages and enables specifically selected State Government agencies, local governments and businesses to identify and record possible criminal activity and suspicious behaviour and report it to police.

Twelve local agencies have been trained by Eyes on the Street officers, including the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder and the Trans Goldfields Bus Service.

Office of Crime Prevention executive manager Bernie Durkin said the program was successful because it recognised preventing crime was everybody’s business.

“Police alone cannot be responsible for preventing all crime – it has to be a community effort,” Mr Durkin said.

“The Eyes on the Street program uses the eyes of people who are working in the community every day to help police gather intelligence about possible criminal activity.”

City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder Mayor Ron Yuryevich said he was pleased council staff could help the fight against crime.

“Many members of council staff, such as our work crews, rangers and building surveyors are constantly out and about in the community,” Mr Yuryevich said.

“The Eyes on the Street program gives them the opportunity, if they do notice something out of the ordinary, to bring what may seem like minor incidences to the attention of the authorities who then may use it in conjunction with other evidence to solve a crime.”

The Eyes on the Street program was developed in 2004 and operates in many townships and cities across the state.

More than 800 agency vehicles have signed up to be ‘eyes on the street’ and more than 4000 incidents of suspicious behaviour have been reported to police.
