Development 'snapshot' at forum

19/09/2008 4:26:00 PM
STRONG interest from the Kalgoorlie-Boulder community in attending this year's What's Down The Track? forum on October 2 is expected by organisers.

Kalgoorlie-Boulder Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KBCCI) chief executive, Hugh Gallagher, said the forum is “designed to provide people who live here or have an interest here with an accurate snapshot of what is likely to happen in the next three years.”

With a change of State Government and anticipated change of policy on uranium mining, and with Energy and Minerals Australia (EMA) managing director Chris Davis speaking on uranium mining at the forum, a strong level of interest was expected, Mr Gallagher said.

“It really is a chance for the community to find out, from the horse's mouth so to speak, what is going on in the region.

“(The forum) is weighted towards the resources industry in the Goldfields-Esperance region up to the Murchison and even the East Pilbara region because Kalgoorlie-Boulder is the service centre for that area,” Mr Gallagher said.

He said the forum, a “collaborative effort” between KBCCI and the Chamber of Minerals and Energy WA, had been held as part of the annual Goldfields Mining Expo in October in previous years.

However, it was decided this year to hold it as a separate event three weeks before the expo.

Mr Gallagher said between 12 and 15 representatives from major corporations operating in the region would make 15-minute presentations on their current and proposed operations.

One of the guest speakers would be Chamber of Commerce and Industry WA executive director economic policy John Nicolaou, Mr Gallagher said.

“It's really a coup to get him out here, he's just back from China. We are going to hear from him on the strength of the Chinese economy and the WA economy – and they are both important.”

The What's Down The Track? Forum will be held from noon to 6pm on Thursday, October 2, at the WMC Conference Centre, MacDonald Street, Kalgoorlie.

To register an interest in attending contact the KBCCI on 9021 2466 or visit www.kalgoorliecci.asn.au/Events/WhatsDownTheTrackMiningForum

Cost is $130.

I am disgusted that there is excitement in the community for Uranium Mining. The people of WA and the unfortunate customers that purchase this radioactive rubbish will suffer the consequences for hundreds if not thousands of years... all for a few bob that'll only last a couple of years. Go get real jobs Uranium suckers.
